A New Chapter For Sweet Boy Lucas
The Backstage Journal
Independent Artists: The Rise of Sweet Boy Lucas
Early Experiences
Starting by learning guitar in his early years of high school, Lucas Knoll Stimeling began his songwriting journey in 2020, often writing about significant events in his unpredictable and exciting life, turning personal experiences into immersive and unique forms of art. Originally from Potsdam, New York, he and his family moved to Merrimack, New Hampshire, during his elementary years (around the time I first met him), where he developed a wide musical taste growing up, drawing inspiration from artists as different as Pink Floyd, Carlos Santana, and Lil Wayne. That mix of styles, as well as changing conditions at home, helped shape a sound rooted in reflection, storytelling, and emotional depth.
Growing up, Lucas was good in class, quick to make people laugh, and just as quick to find trouble.
Finishing high school in early 2023 with a GED, Lucas was forced to move out at the young age of 18, and begin to experience, like anyone, being an adult for the first time. Transitioning from high school grocery store jobs to demanding landscaping work, balancing full-time employment, and discovering himself in music was a challenge. Despite this, he always took the time to stay up late nights after 10-hour shifts of waiting at family restaurants, just to practice his guitar.
When he finished school, it was around January 2023. I didn’t hear much from him for a while. After hanging out all the time, jamming on random weeknights after school and sports, it was quiet for quite some time. He spent that time getting his living situation figured out on his own, and by the time I graduated in June, we were back on the road. During this period, Luke’s progression in guitar skills grew exponentially, cycling work, jamming covers together at my house (I was his drummer!), and he would easily play guitar for hours. Every. Single. Day.
For years prior, I studied lots of music theory, more specifically music composition, production, and mixing. Luke seemed to always be fascinated by my experiences, and he took the first step to inquire about collaborating on his original ideas, where I could help him with his very first projects. We started from the ground up, trial and error, multiple sessions a week, months on end. Learning the best way to record his acoustic guitar. With one microphone? Or 2 microphones to capture his vocals too? Should we record his vocals separately? And so on.
Lucas always had some great original ideas, writing chord progressions, and adding lyrics where it felt necessary, reflecting on his experiences at the time. Family, Relationships, Drugs…
At first, there were so many ideas that we couldn’t get them all recorded quickly enough!
In late 2023, Lucas released his debut single, “Hit the Ground Running,” under the name Lucas Stimes, marking his first official step into the music world. Like anyone’s first song, it had some flaws, but it was a real motivator for what was yet to come. Our recording style was very intricate, since Luke’s goal was to record everything from scratch, with our real instruments. Nowadays, most music is sampled or made with a drum pattern in a DAW, or by looping a 4-bar progression. I literally bought a bass guitar for my studio just so we could mess around with a real bass and record the instrument instead of using a plugin. Just to get that original, homemade sound.
Sure, I added variation in velocity and timing to make the bass plugin sound realistic at first, but Luke knew what he wanted, and we made it happen.
Outside of studio sessions, there was a huge effort to help guide the early stages of promotion and planning. We reached out to restaurants, pubs, and other events where he had many live performances to express his talents and promote his name in the area.
Continuing to manage living on his own, making sure he paid rent, he was still learning to manage his “addictive” personality, as he always told me. Chasing the next skill to learn on the guitar, to grow his audience more, or manage his relationship with substances. Despite this, we continued releasing “Leaves” on January 12, 2024, and “Delicate Intimacy” on May 1, 2024. Continuing this, he released his last single under the name Lucas Stimes in New Hampshire, “Unlock Your Soul” on June 28, 2024, this time in the form of a live version, recording guitar and vocals in one take. This totaled almost 15 minutes of original recordings to be released in the first half of 2024.

Luke’s real solo journey
Not long after, in September of 2024, Lucas made a bold move: he relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, chasing the heart of the music industry. For nearly a year, he balanced the same day jobs with constant creative work, performing in restaurants, bars, and on the streets, connecting with other musicians, and promoting his music through live streams and social media. Taking such a serious risk expressed the ambition Lucas had to becoming the best he could, gaining serious industry exposure, and capturing the Broadway life first-hand…
It was a period defined by non-stop work, growth, and new experiences, giving him a deeper understanding of both the craft and the business of music.
By the end of 2025, after catching up with Lucas over hours of phone calls and continuous messaging, he began to express his realization that Nashville wasn’t what he was looking for.
Lucas moved to Nashville, as the “starry-eyed dreamer,” as anyone does, and he described Nashville as way more country-oriented than he thought, and it simply wasn’t his style. Early on, he was heavily influenced by drugs, immediately immersed in the negative side of what it takes to be a city boy. There was a lot of distraction and noise, but he needed to focus and stay present. Through these experiences, he ultimately learned what he needed to do in order to keep up with the fast-paced lifestyle of the big city, and he reflects on his time in the city as neither a positive or negative experience. Lucas wants his time there to be “said for what it was.”
After his time in Nashville, Lucas took some time to recover and ultimately returned to his hometown of Potsdam, New York, to reset and refocus. What followed was the finding of a new stage name that had more meaning to him. It was a reinvention. Adopting the new name, Sweet Boy Lucas, was ultimately a result of his experiences in rehab and traveling. He made lots of connections with amazing people, who always joked about calling each other a “sweet boy”, a name tossed around when they did something as simple as holding the door for someone, and it just stuck for Lucas.
A friendly guy he knew from Indianapolis, named Big Dave, said Lucas looked a lot like Ronnie “sunshine” Bass from Remember The Titans, but it was already taken on social media platforms, specifically Spotify, Apple Music, etc.
He liked Sweet Boy Lucas because it was more than just a spin off of his real name, but it carries more of a story to it.
What’s Next?
This new chapter quickly led to new music. With the help of West Branch Recording Studio in his hometown, Lucas released the single “Now I Know” on October 15, 2025, marking his first official release under the Sweet Boy Lucas name and his first official release since his time in New Hampshire. The track reflects a more refined sound and a clearer artistic direction, signaling growth both musically and personally. This also led to Lucas building his own record label, still keeping the goal in mind since his early days collaborating with me, to stay away from the giant brands that form restrictive contracts, and maintain ownership of his own, SweetBoyRecords.
Now, he’s finalized the release of his next single, “Willow,” on February 14, 2026. The song continues to build on the emotional storytelling and melodic style that have become central to his work, blending the most unique instruments and sounds you’d never expect to be a significant factor in his songs. Ultimately Reflecting on his experiences, specifically his time in Nashville, Tennessee, he continues to share snapshots of his life, where music is the only way he can.
Alongside new material, Lucas is revisiting earlier recordings started between early 2023 and 2025, previously released songs, as well as his ideas that were started years ago, that still hold significant meaning to him, like “Gentle Wave,” “Game of Life,” “Is It True,” and much more. These songs will appear on his upcoming EP titled “Bury The Hatchet,” expected to feature most of his original works from New Hampshire. The project serves as both a reflection on past experiences and a transition into the next phase of his career.
Whether performing live, writing at home, or recording in the studio, Lucas continues to approach music as a very deep form of personal expression. Each release marks another step forward, shaped by real experiences, new environments, and the people who’ve been part of the journey along the way.
With new music on the way, Sweet Boy Lucas is entering a defining chapter—one built on independence, growth, and a commitment to telling honest stories through sound.
Although years in the making, his journey is only beginning. Luke’s dedication to the craft is continuously shaping a promising path to the expression of his story.
